SUNN O))) – Monoliths & Dimensions
Monoliths & Dimensions
People either like or dislike SUNN O))), there is little or no middle ground. They make slow, heavy, dark and powerful drone metal and their works are epic in size, more often than not passing the 10 minute mark, so few people outside of the world of extreme music are even aware of their existence, which is a shame, because their music is incredible.
“Monoliths & Dimensions” is there latest work, consisting of four tracks ranging from 9 minutes to almost 18. While still dark, slow and full of feedback, it’s also there most diverse work yet. The songs are crushing and move at glacial speeds, but the addition of choirs, strings, and the vocals of Attila Csihar from Mayhem bring out so much more emotion and power.
The 17 minutes of dueling guitar and bass drones backing the spoken word of Attila Csihar make “Aghartha” a powerful opening statement. The choral vocals on “Big Church” add a depth to the music, pulling the listener deep into their despair. “Hunting & Gathering (Cydonia)” actually speeds thing sup, although in the world of Sunn O))), fast barely breaks a turtles pace. “Alice” is where things get even darker, and more experimental, with is blues foundations and the swirling horns and harps, it is quite possibly the best song they have ever recorded.
