Horseback – The Invisible Mountain
Anyone who knows me knows that I love me some Black Math Horseman, Ancestors, and Isis. These bands have basicly been my soundtrack for most of 2010. Well I have another band to add to that list: Horseback. I recently came across the bands latest album “The Invisible Mountain” and have been blown away.
The songs are long, sprawling groovy jams. While not exactly like Black Math or Ancestors, Horseback are very much in that same vein of atmospheric, post hardcore metal. The music falls into a heavy, hypnotic groove, with a strong emotional context with a repetitive tribal vibe to it that pulls the listener into a hypnotic trance.
The vocals are in that black metal growl style, but they are mixed down into the music, much like Isis, in such a way that they become another instrument and add to the overall sound.
Apparently the band is actually just one guy, which is amazing, considering the depth of the music. This is another great addition to the whole post-rock/black metal/stoner vibe that has seen some great releases recently.
