Ludicra – The Tenant

Of all the releases this year, the top contender for album of the year so far has got to be “The Tenant” by the San Francisco based psych-black metal band Ludicra,

With strong psychedelic overtones and progressive passages, the band successfully transcends the constraints of traditional black metal and are able to expand the depth and emotional context of the songs. It’s a testament to the musicianship of all that members that they are able to pull this off with such precision.

Beyond their musical abilities, the fact that the vocals and lead guitar are handled by a woman, something that is quite uncommon in metal, especially in the black metal sub-genre, helps the band stand out.  It’s also something that is really a non-point.  For the most part, her vocals sound similar to many other bands, screeching growls, but with much more emotion.  And the added clean female vocal overlays allow a certain beauty to creep into their work.

“The Tenant” is a complex, harsh and powerful work of art that really deserves to be heard by all.  If not the top of my best of list, it’s a guarantee it will be in the top five!
