Loss – Despond
As I read the press sheet for the new record by Loss and saw the “funeral/death doom metal” tag, I wasn’t sure what to expect. There are some Funeral Doom records that I love, but often, the music is a little slow for my tastes. Regardless, I took a deep breath and jumped into the record, expecting sleep mode to kick right in….but instead, as it began with the spoken word intro “Weathering the Blight.” something grabbed hold of me and for the next hour or so, I was completely blown away.
This is one of those almost perfect records that will get under your skin and keep you listening and wanting to come back. The music is powerful and, as with most great albums, it creates an atmosphere that affects the listener on an emotional level that is somewhat cathartic. The processional drumming and intricate guitar work pull the music along, placing the listener into a trance, while the guttural vocals ratchet up the despair.
With an overall concept based around suicide and the process leading up to the act, sadness truly reigns supreme here, but interestingly, it’s not really a depressing record. Loss has somehow managed to instill a sense of hope within these misery-filled these dirges and while you may feel some sadness creeping into your mood, there is never a sense of complete hopelessness.
“Despond” is yet another incredible piece of music brought to us by our friends at Profound Lore.
